Getting the Word Out to the Public and Professionals

For those of you who are interested in spreading the Depression Recovery Education news, here are some suggestions from a career Television Manager.

1- Go VIRAL- That means we start blogging and using the web--and the word starts spreading.

2- If several people will start blogs and tell all their friends and class members about them, the word will start to spread.

3- On our blogs, explain our story. Why did we get interested in these programs? What is our involvement in the Mental Health arena? Etc.

4- Keep the blogs to under 500 words. Put appropriate pictures on the blogs to add interest. Remember that it is open to the public, so do the blog accordingly.

5- About every 4th blog, write on a current topic that has some controversy if you want to get more readership to your blog.

6- Know our objectives: To provide educational opportunities for professionals in Utah, and to educate the Utah public about Depression and Anxiety healing (and for Jacob, about ADD and ADHD).

7- When our under-structure is sound in Utah, we want to appear on local talk shows, radio stations, and newspapers so that the public can have access to the program.

8- Let's Do This!!!!

Two Reasons to Take Your Kids Grocery Shopping

I thought the following commentary would be a useful addition to the nutrition class of your recovery programs - it's offered by Shane "The People's Chemist" Ellison:

"Nothing manifests vibrant health more than what we eat. That's why my wife and I always make it a point to take our kids grocery shopping with us. This allows us to teach them how to avoid sneaky labeling and deceptive branding, and how to pick the best foods for a healthy meal.

The first lesson is how to read labels so that they don't get ensnared in grocery store fat traps. We teach them to look for things like high fructose corn syrup, MSG, dextrose and sucrose. Then, we explain how to avoid the hormone smashers so that your muscles don't evaporate. These include the health branded sports drinks, juices and flavored teas.

The second lesson is how important it is to pick a healthy balance of the right foods. We let our kids pick out their own veggies, which gets them excited about eating good food. (We also let them help prepare their meals, which gets them even more involved in healthy eating.)

including them in your weekly shopping trip helps kids realize how important healthy natural foods are to their bodies. In my family, health is wealth. And in this we are abundant!"

About the author:

Shane Ellison's entire career has been dedicated to the study of molecules - how they give life and how they take from it. He was a two-time recipient of the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Grant for his research in biochemistry and physiology. He is a bestselling author, holds a master's degree in organic chemistry, and has first-hand experience in drug design.

Connecting the Dots

Thought you'd be interested in the following article from Bloomberg News:
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601124&sid=a4V6UEpXf_mY&refer=home

In a letter sent today to the National Alliance for Mental Illness, based in Arlington, Virginia, Grassley asked the nonprofit group to disclose any financial backing from drug companies or from foundations created by the industry.

The Iowa Republican, in a series of hearings and investigations, has focused on financial ties between the drug industry, doctors and academic institutions. His efforts have led New York-based Pfizer Inc. to begin disclosing consulting payments to U.S. doctors, and Harvard Medical School in Boston to reexamine its conflict-of-interest policies. Now Grassley is expanding his inquiries to nonprofit groups.

“I have come to understand that money from the pharmaceutical industry shapes the practices of nonprofit organizations which purport to be independent in their viewpoints and actions,” Grassley wrote in his letter.

Officials at the National Alliance for Mental Illness didn’t return calls for comment.

Deep Breathing/health DVD's and video

I have a video made in 1996 called "Shim Shin Key". It has deep breathing, self massage w/ a wooden rope roller, more deep breathing with movement, and ends with meditation. I love it, and realized it is a perfect thing for class participants. Unfortunately it is also out of production!

So I called the Collage Video site where I bought it, and they recommended two DVD's that are similar-- except no self-message. "Qi Gong fire & Water" Tai Chi. They said it is "very calming, rejuvenating & nurturing". The other one is "Crunch Candlelight Yoga" with Sarah Ivanhoe. They both include deep breathing exercises and some meditation along with respective exercises. That website is www.ColageVideo.com.

My husband found a self-massage rope roller after looking for some time on the internet. It's on a website called Lucky Vitamin.com. It's called the Double Rope massage roller. If only Jhoon Rhee would do another Shim Shin Key video. It's perfect! And he served as an advisor to Presidents Reagan and Bush so it makes it real ligit. Oh well. Any of you want to make an exercise dvd?

Health to All!

The Road Back

If time allows, you may want to familiarize yourselves with Jim Harper's work prior to our meeting on Saturday. His book, which outlines the program he has developed, is available free of charge, via this link on his website: http://www.theroadback.org/workbook.htm

Happy reading!

I'll see you on Saturday!

Hello Friends!

I am so happy to have a home to call our own (Thank you, Jacob!), and I look forward to stepping out into this wonderful new adventure with all of you - one that encompasses our dreams and hopes for a better world and a brighter future for our children!

It was great meeting those of you whom I had only communicated with before, and a double pleasure to be with those of you I have already added to my family of friends. I hope we will have Dr Curtain and Dr Fila grace us with their presence at our next meeting!

May God bless us - each and everyone of us - the dreams of our hearts, the integrity of our thoughts and the work of our hands!

Saturday Jim Harper Training

Dear Gang,

Here are the details on the Saturday training. Although monitoring of this process is best left up to MD's and ND's, I think it is worthwhile to be up-to-date with the best research on tapering, so we can teach basic principles in our classes.

Here's the scoop: The nation's premiere expert on safe tapering procedures for psychiatric medication, Jim Harper, will be in town (see www.theroadback.org) this Saturday. Jim regularly trains physicians all over the world, especially Europe, in the latest research on the issue. It will be a fairly intimate gathering at a residence in Bountiful, so there should be plenty of time to ask any questions you have.

The training will go from 11-5:30 and lunch will be provided. Location: Ed Fila--1373 East Skyline Dr, Bountiful , Utah 84010(Take 400 North and go east to 1300 East. then turn left(N). This becomes Skyline).

Feel free to e-mail me or call my cell if you have any questions or would like more details (801-712-1346). Please RSVP to me by Thursday if you can make it and I will reserve a spot. Also, you are welcome to forward this to any other MD or other professional who you think might have interest. There may be a few more spaces still left.

Regards,
--Jacob
